Buccal cavity and Teeth in cow:

The Buccal cavity is different from other animals. The digestions of food begin in the mouth and hence, have a set of teeth and a long rough tongue in the mouth. Like human beings they have 32 teeth. The upper front jaw is toothless, instead have dental pad. They have 6 incisors and 2 canines in the front bottom jaw which help them in cutting grass food. It is the long, rough tongue and the dental pad at the top which help the cow grasp and gather the grass. The tongue is rough and thus, never gets hurt by the blades of the grass. The important role of teeth in cow is chewing and grinding, so the cow has 6 premolars and  6molars in both its jaws to add up to a total of 24.
Saliva plays an important role in digestion of food in the mouth. It keeps the feed moist helping the cow to chew comfortably. It is said that cows produce an average of 20 to 35 gallons of saliva a day.
