Computer Components...
In this section of the site you can find out lots of information on some of the major components of a computer system. Below is a short list of the major components and on your left is a list of pages where you can find out more about each component.
Motherboard: A motherboard is the main circuit board inside a computer system. All the parts of the system connect together through the motherboard.
Processor: Also known as a CPU (Central Processing Unit). The operation of most CPUs is to execute a sequence of stored instructions called a program. The faster your CPU, the faster applications such as Microsoft Word and computer games will load.
Memory: Also known as RAM (Random Access Memory) is a form of computer data storage.
Hard Drives: Is a form of computer data storage where all your main files are stored such as music, pictures, videos, documents etc. The size and speed of hard drives is rapidly growing and the price of top of the range hard drives are falling quickly as technology advances.
Graphics & Sound Cards: Graphics cards are important for being able to view your PC on a monitor, TV or projector. There are some really expensive graphics cards for people who like to play PC games and view HD movies on their PC. Sound cards are needed if you want to listen to music via speakers or headphones or if you want to plug in a microphone. In most cases motherboards have built in sound cards.
Optical Drives: An optical drive is a drive that can read different types of disc formats such as Blu-Ray, DVD or CD. Blu-Ray is the newest and is currently the most expensive, however, a dual-layer Blu-Ray disc can hold 50GB where as a dual-layer DVD can only hold 9GB so people believe Blu-Ray is well worth the expense.
Cases: This is a computer case. Computer cases come in many shapes and forms, some small, some big. Some look basic, some look artistic. At the end of the day, when building a PC, choose the case that suits you. You can't really go wrong when choosing one.
Power Supplies: Also known as a PSU (Power Supply Unit) is what provides your PC with power. If you were to build a high-tech PC using powerful components then we would recommend getting a high wattage PSU, maybe a 500W PSU or maybe even more.
