The term "Antibiotic" is actually incorrect, as it means "anti-life." A more accurate term would be "Antimicrobial" drugs, targeting microbes.
Who first came up with the idea of chemotherapy, or the treatment of diseases with chemical substances?
Do you take antibiotics when you have a common cold? Watch out, that is one way of spreading antibiotic resistance. Antibiotics works against bacteria, not viruses!
What Are Antimicrobial Drugs/Antibiotics?
Imagine a time when a simple wound or fever could result in death. Fortunately, today, thanks to the discovery of antibiotics, not even a complex disease such as tuberculosis is a cause for worry. Antimicrobial drugs, popularly known as antibiotics, are used when the body's normal immune defenses are not able to overcome infectious diseases. Since their discovery, they have drastically reduced the number of deaths caused by infection.
These chemotherapeutic agents work by interfering with the growth of various pathogenic bacteria, thus stopping the spread of disease. However, these 'miracle' drugs are not without problems. Currently, various strains of bacteria have developed resistance to antimicrobial drugs, and diseases once easily cured by antibiotics are now deathly.
