Cancer Treatments
Nanoencapsulation

Nowadays, cancer is a disease not uncommon to people all around us. While there is no cure for cancer, current treatments have proven effective, but at what cost? I’m not talking about the price of medicine and surgery; everyone knows that this is expensive. What I am referring to are the side effects of the two most common treatments for cancer. Radiation therapy, which is literally exposing a cancer patient to intense and controlled radiation, can cause skin, throat and mouth damage as well as permanent hair loss.

Chemotherapy, a treatment through medication, can cause hearing loss and heart and kidney damage. A new creation in nanotechnology is nanoencapsulation, which involves injecting a nanoshell made of carbon with toxins inside into the blood stream. Upon reaching its destination at the cancerous cell, the carbon shell would be heated to trigger it to burst and realease toxins which effectively destroy the cancer cells. These nanoshells are only a few nanometers in size.
