The mission of this site is to illustrate the representation of Hawaii-through various examples, in multimedia. As Native Hawaiians, we have witnessed the “palm trees and coconut bra” representation of our islands throughout our childhood. From Blue Hawaii with its role being the touchstone for what is “Hawaiian” in media. To Lilo and Stitch a cartoon created by Disney depicting a presumably Hawaiian girl, in a dysfunctional family who befriends an alien. To TV sitcoms, although unsuccessful, depicting promiscuous Caucasian teenagers who live on the island of Maui and live their lives with booze, parties and sex. This representation of Hawaii does not always necessarily embody Native Hawaiian culture, tradition or ideals. This site is here to epitomize how these movies have shaped our view of Hawaii and Hawaiian culture in general, to date.
