AT WORK
Employment of people with physical disabilities often depends on attitudes that people in society have. Hopefully, in 21st century people realize that people with physical disabilities are very much alike everyone else, and can be productive good workers. Often the laws are needed to protect their rights to work and be treated well in the work place. In addition, laws are needed to make sure that employers are providing accommodations for disabled such as ramps for wheelchairs, desk that are wheelchair accessible and communication tools needed.
In the United States there is a special law that protects people with disabilities in the work place. This law is called Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA. It became a law in 1990. The laws deals with many services that people with physical disabilities need for example transportation, education, health care and recreation. But, the big portion of the law deals with employment. This law makes it illegal to discriminate against people with disabilities in place of work. Any employer in America must follow this law. This goes to big employers and small businesses with more than 15 employees. They have to make sure that people with physical disabilities have same opportunity as everyone else when the apply and interview for the job, that they are not denied employment just because they are disabled and that their work place is accessible to them.
In addition to ADA there are several other important laws in the USA that protect people with disabilities, including the Rehabilitation Act, the Workforce Investment Act and the Civil Service Reform Act. This laws have helped open opportunities for people with disabilities, but they still face challenges. Many of challenges have to do with people's attitudes. Hopefully, with raising awareness more people will begin to treat physically disabled fairly and give them the equal opportunity.
