NEUROMUSCULAR

Neuromuscular disorders affect nervous and muscular systems of our body. They can affect the nerves which are body's messengers, so that nerves cannot tell muscles what to do. This also makes muscles weaker. People with neuromuscular disorders may have problems controlling their body or  moving. Below are some common neuromuscular disorders.

AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS

This disease is also known as a Lou Gehrig's disease. It was named after one of the best baseball players in history who got this disease and had to stop playing baseball because of it and died when he was young. This is a disease that affects neurons which are nerves in brain and spinal cord. Neurons cannot send messages to voluntary muscles so that person has trouble walking, talking and moving. The disease is progressive which means that it keeps getting worse with time until a person cannot control any muscles. This includes lungs so a person cannot even breathe on his own. Cause of this disease is unknown and there is no cure. There are some medicines that can slow it a little.

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
This is a disease of brain and spinal cord. In this disease a sheath that protects nerve cells gets damaged. This causes nerve cells to have problems sending messages to the muscles. Than the person starts having problems with moving and with balance. they can also have problems with vision. This disease can also be progressive which means that it gets worse with time, but some people do not have progressive type. Some scientists think that MS may be an autoimmune disease. This is when body cells attack other body cells. In other words, a body attacks itself. Bit the cause is really not known. There are medicines to slow it down and control it. Also, physical therapy can help keep muscles stronger. Unfortunately there is not yet a cure.
MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY
One common genetic disorder that makes people physically disabled is called Muscular Dystrophy. This disease is progressive. this means that it get worse with time. The disease makes the body muscles weak. This is because the body misses a gene that makes proteins  that  build muscles. A person who suffers from muscular dystrophy loses control of muscles and will have to use walkers and wheelchairs. Also, other muscles like heart and lungs can become weak which is very dangerous. There are many types of Muscular Dystrophy and few of them affect boys more than girls. Unfortunately, there is no medicine or surgery that can heal muscular dystrophy. Many people who suffer from this disease get physical therapy to try to exercise and strengthen muscles.
MYASTHENIA GRAVIS

This disease has the most effect on the muscles of the head like eyelids and throat. What happens is that disease interferes with messages sent by nerves to these muscles. This happens when the disease makes our own body produce a substance that blocks nerve messages to muscles. This disease cannot be cured but can be controlled. There are medicines that can keep body from making a substance that blocks nerve messages. But, a person has to take this medicine all the time.

SPINAL MUSCULAR ATROPHY

This is genetic disease which means that we get it from our families. In this disease nerves in the spinal cord are affected. This makes nerves not able to send messages to voluntary muscles. This is were atrophy happens to muscles.Atrophy means to weaken and waste away. Than a person starts having problems walking, breathing and even swallowing. There is no cure. There are some medicines that can help keep muscles stronger, and also physical therapy helps. Person can have  one gene for SMA and not have disease, but that person can pass the gene to her or his children. If each parent passes a gene, a child will get SMA.
EPILEPSY
Most common symptom of epilepsy is seizures. This is because epilepsy is a disease of brain and central nervous system. In this disease nerves are sort of misfiring causing seizure. People can get epilepsy from brain infections, it can be inherited, but in many cases doctors do not know the cause, It is a common disease that, according to the Center Disease Control, affect 2.7 million Americans. Seizures can be very dangerous because the can cause stroke and heart attack. Person having a seizure can become unconscious and can hurt himself if the fall or hit something during the seizure. Epilepsy cannot be cured but symptoms be controlled with seizure medication.
PARKINSON'S DISEASE
Parkinson's disease affect brain nerve cells. The nerve cells break down and a person starts having problems controlling movements of the voluntary muscles. Often muscles move without a person wanting them to because of nerve cell damage. A person can have tremors  such as shaking uncontrollably. This disease gets worse with time. Scientists think that this disease may be genetic, but they are not sure. There is no cure. But there are some medicines that can control symptoms somewhat. Also, there are other treatments like brain stimulation. Doctor does it by sending a little bit of electric current to parts of brain that control movement, to improve how this part of brain works.
