INTRODUCTION Hula has been a part of Hawai‘i’s culture for over a century. Though now displayed as a form of art and exhibition of beautiful dance and song, the foremost purpose of this style of expression was to exalt and give thanks to the various Hawaiian deities. After the arrival of the Protestant missionaries in 1819, Hula was perceived as blasphemous and inappropriate; inevitably, an edict was invoked in December of 1825 that forbid the performing of hula within a public arena. However due to the fighting and passionate spirit of the outraged and insulted Hawaiian people, the edict was ignored and the dance prevailed. Today, hula is acknowledged and practiced by many countries worldwide. Although it has been altered, the dance still keeps its traditional Hawaiian authenticity.
