Costumes and Implements Costumes adorned by hula dancers were, and still are, an important component for the performance and general effect upon the audience. Traditionally, the costume which a dancer wore could be affiliated with what social rank they assumed.
Flowers constituted a large part of the dancers’ costumes.  Blossoms of ilima, lehua, maile, ieie, and like were used to add color and fragrance.  Flowers were intwined to make lei, which was worn on head and shoulders.  Bracelets and anklets that dancers wore were called küpe‘e.  These were made of whale teeth, bone, shell-work, dog-teeth and fiber-stuffs.

The skirt used while performing, known as the pä‘ü, was worn by both men and women. For women, the pä‘ü was added to the garments they wore throughout the day. For men, their pä‘ü was worn outside of their malo. A woman’s pä‘ü was made of different materials, but retained the similar style. Ribbons of hau (hibiscus), ti leaf, or banana fiber were strung around the waist. An ornate pä‘ü was comprised of fine tapa, usually several yards long, and was painted with stamped figures. This outer tapa was coined the term, the kilohana. As was usual custom to give names to inanimate objects, Hawaiians named the ends of the pä‘ü Kukapu‘ulakalani and Leleamahu‘i.
