Housing issues are in the heart of 21st century problems. Today’s world faces issue of homelessness, lack of affordable and appropriate housing, ongoing environmental pollution and resource depletion, and rapid urbanization that is making existing infrastructure inadequate. The problem is global. It affects highly industrialized countries, as well as developing nations. From the urban slums of South America to the issues of the USA’s homeless, today’s world has to rise to the challenge of housing 6 billion people.
Tackling such a global issue takes the entire world. In the Millennium Development Goals, the United Nations placed the eradication of poverty as one of the main goals. Eradication of poverty definitely includes eradication of main housing issues. The role of governments in improving these issues is huge. This includes international collaboration as well as action taken by individual countries.
Today, many housing issues are addressed by numerous charity organizations that tackle a variety of issues ranging from homelessness to improving economic opportunities. In addition to organizations, each individual can help improve the situation. For example, conserving energy and carpooling could have a great impact on health of our cites.
