GLOBAL RELEVANCE
Need for shelter is a basic human need. It provides security pride of ownership and a place to raise future generations. Through centuries, people have used materials from nature to develop shelters. Cities were created to serve societies and planned to have healthy sanitation and public works. But, 21st century faces many housing challenges. These challenges are not located only in the developing world, but are issues that the entire world has to face
To begin with, homelessness and number of people living in substandard housing is increasing worldwide. According to the UN Human Settlement Programme almost 100 million of people in the world can be considered homeless. Others live in substandard conditions. Around the world millions are displaced by economic hardship, wars and natural disasters. This makes cities congested and affordable housing hard to find. In addition, many places around the world are facing issue of inadequate infrastructure. This results in unhealthy living conditions and environmental pollution. Cities of the world were not built to sustain the population they have. We have to understand that the world of the future depends on solving the urbanization issues that we face.
Today issues of housing are global. Therefore, global community must find a way to improve the housing situation to secure the future. Committing to support Millennium Development Goals of eradicating poverty and assisting in economic development is the key to global solution. Today there are many developing countries that need assistance to stand on their feet. Global community needs to find a way to open the economic opportunities for these countries through education and investment in industries that can create jobs. In addition, environmental concerns, mostly created by the developed countries, are affecting the entire world. Therefore, countries that pollute most need to find a way to reduce their pollution, as well as help other countries develop clean industries and replenish resources destroyed by irresponsibility to environment. Finally, the issue of infrastructure must be tackled. Old and failing infrastructure around the world must be repaired. In the 21st century, there shouldn't be cities whose poor sanitation causes thousands to die. Global community needs to bow together to find affordable ways to fix the infrastructure and create infrastructure when needed to avoid loss of lives and damage to economy.
Global issues require global action. Hopefully, global community will find ways and take seriously the housing issues that the world faces. Let’s hope that in the future all citizen of our planet will have a safe place to call home.
