EMO-kids
Nowadays, we frequently hear the term EMO. It is used to for a person who follows the clothing, make-up and the music labeled as EMO. But what does it really mean that a person is EMO? Being EMO is more than following a trend. It’s a state of mind, usually common amongst teenagers who tend to get depressed sometimes.
The term EMO probably comes from the word ‘emotional’, which can make us think of those persons who are very sensible, affective and impressionable. EMO is, in fact, the state in which a person finds itself because of some disappointments that the person couldn’t get through (in some cases) or just because “the movie was too nice to end up like this” or listening to disheartening lyrics (in case of others).
This state named ‘EMO’ is, after some psychologists, a sequel of a trauma which modified the ways of thinking and of acting in the individual.
How can we identify an EMO kid?
Many times these people have the tendency to hate themselves, to consider themselves to be inferior. They also tend to be extremely severe to themselves, all these ending sometimes with the individual seeking suicide.
This state appears in adolescence, the critical period, after some specialists, when teenagers who are trying to find themselves again, when they have the chance to feel frustrated.
Short historical of the term
At the beginning (1985-1994) the term ‘EMO’ was used in the music industry, being a subgroup of rock .The listeners of this kind of music became ‘EMO-kids’ , the way they dressed became the ‘EMO-style’ and the way they used make-up became the ’EMO make-up’.

Emotional was used to describe music-groups like:
A Fire Inside ( AFI )
Fall Out Boy
Funeral for a Friend
My Chemical Romance
Panic! at the disco
Taking back Sunday
These were labeled as EMO for different reasons like:
the rhythm of the songs;
- the meaning of the lyrics;
- the clothes and the make-up of the singers.
Many fans didn’t agree at all with the way their idols were being labeled, denying entirely the fact that they were singing EMO music.
In an interview Guy Piccioto is asked “how does it feel to be the creator of the EMO music?” and his answers was ‘I deny this attribution. I’ve always thought that this is the most retarded term ever invented. I know all the bands hate being catalogued in this way. They feel offended. But honestly I consider that all the bands in which I was a member were punk-rock. For me it makes no sense.’
This is one of the thousands descriptions form the Urban Dictionary for the expression: ‘EMO kids’ they dress exclusively in black, they refuse any shadow of love and they like painting their nails black’
Their way of showing EMO-ness:
It is said that the EMO kid is a mixture between a Goth kid, a rock kid, and a punk kid.
An EMO usually wears eyeliner, has long ruffled hair, which is painted black, pink or blue. The clothes are a bit unusual. They tend to mix them in a way other people wouldn’t. They’re favorite accessory is a huge bag. And, don’t forget, you will always find them with their headphones, listening to their music.
It is important to understand that chosing this trend it's an unconsciously way for teenagers to ask for help. It's a sign they need affection and attention. So don't close your eyes and pretend it is just a 'trend'!
