Causes

Nobody knows for sure why some children get depressed while others just get a little sad and move on. Although external events can affect a child's mood, a pre-existing physiological vulnerability probably existed, causing the depressed reaction. Most likely the depressed reaction is the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain which is probably inherited. The chemicals involved in depression are neurotransmitters that regulate mood and endorphins that are responsible for producing positive moods.

Ones of the most known factors that cause depression are:
The history of the family - the genetic inheritance plays a very important role in depression. It can be transmitted from a generation to another. A certain biologic vulnerability can be inheritance. This kind of thing is happening first of all in case of bipolar disorders. Not all the persons which have a genetic inheritance will develop comportamental disorders. In some cases it seems that the additional factors (the stress from work, school and the family problems) are more influencing than the genetic factors.

Traumatic and stressful factors – the financial problems, the break-ups or the death of someone you loved can determine the depression. You can become depressive even after a different type of changes in your life like: a low mark at school, a bad entourage, a parent who abandons you to work in foreign countries.

The pessimist personality - the people who have a much reduced faith in themselves and adopt in general negative opinions are exposed to the risk of developing depressive disorders.

The physical condition - the severe illnesses like cardiovascular affections (the cerebral vascular accidents, the hypertension and the preinfarct etc.), the cancer, and HIV can contribute at the installation of the depression, because of all the stress and concerns produced by the respective illnesses. Depression deteriorate these medical conditions, weakening the entire organically structure and rising the intensity of the pain. In some cases, depression can be also caused by the prescribed medication for treating these affections.
Other physiological disorders – anxious disorders, eating problems (anorexia, bulimia), schizophrenia and the consumption of some substances in abuse mixed with depression.

The family problems - the most predisposed teenagers at depression are those who were abandoned by their parents, to work in another countries. Some studies showed that if one of the parents left from home to work in foreign countries, the relationship of the teenager with the parent who remained home is getting worse. Also the teenagers abandoned by their parents can resort to consume forbidden substances like alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs to fill the emptiness from their soul. The teenagers who have a parent left in foreign countries have the similar profile with the teenagers whom parents separated or divorced.

There are cases in which the teenagers are left home alone. In these kinds of situations, because they don’t have a support, a shoulder to cry can begin to accumulate a huge number of absents, to take low marks at school, to have behavior issues. It’s very hard at this difficult age not to be influenced by a bad entourage. At every step there are temptations and even the most powerful of all can chose the worst path. Finally, some of them are giving up and because of the sadness and the thoughts that they were left all alone in this ruthless world, they suicide.

Difficulty in socializing with others - it is very important for a teenager to have a social life, to have friends with whom to share interest, thoughts and problems. But, there are teenagers who get rejected by others from different reasons. This rejection can affect their confidence and hurt badly their feelings. Automatically they will experience difficulty in socializing with others. The loose of confidence can make them feel worthless, although in reality they’re not.

Solitude - it’s in the nature of humans to interact with other people. Communication is very important, especially for teenagers that need guidance. In order to feel safe, they need the companion of other people, understanding and love. It is essential for them to be accompanied through this rough period of transformations and changes.

Exterior aspect - many teenagers believe that it is necessary to look good in order to be liked by others. Seeking the approval, they tend to imitate the looks of the stars from TV and they firmly condemn every small imperfection, being harsh on themselves and resorting to drastic methods that can cause damage to their body. But they often forget that beauty hasn’t the same meaning for every people. Different humans have different concepts about beauty. And certainly, after you get to know somebody and care for him/her, you can’t even notice the details of the exterior, focusing only on the bond that was created between you. So, as a conclusion, it is more important to care about the beauty inside, than to obsess constantly about the superficial beauty of the outside.

Other physiological disorders – anxious disorders, eating problems (anorexia, bulimia), schizophrenia and the consumption of some substances in abuse mixed with depression.
