Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the PNA, announced the dissolution of the former
unity government on June 14th 2007. He appointed a new Prime minister, SalamFayyad,
and dismissed the old Prime Minister, Ismail Haniyeh. Fayyad was given the task of
forming a new government in the Gaza Strip by President, Abbas. The former Prime
Minister, Ismail Haniyeh, believed that it was best to keep the old government
because it was chosen democratically. Because of this, there was a 4 day battle which
resulted in the Fatah-led loss of power in the Gaza Strip.
