Asylum In The News
As you are well aware this website is here to inform and to help Asylum Seekers in the UK. And of course you have all probably seen the way that they are exploited and made out to be the ‘bad guys’ in the news. We must understand that although this may be the case for some select asylum seekers, this is inaccurate for the majority of asylum seekers.

The Asylum Seeker community in Britain has always seemed to have some sort of negative image. Newspapers jump at the first sight of any little incident and live to try and turn it into a nationwide scandal just so they can make more money. They blow things out of proportion and make it seem like Asylum Seekers do things like take away the homes of the British and take all of the jobs; this is simply not the case because, as we know from another page on this website, Asylum Seekers are not allowed to work. They also do not receive enough money to purchase a new house of any value and so cannot be stealing the homes of the British public. It is unfair to take this negative view for every asylum seeker, and we should take each case as an individual one.
In 2003, 'The Sun' launched an online petition asking the public to sign up. The aim of the petition was to stop the government being to ‘lenient’ on Asylum Seekers. They had no evidence to support what they said, and have placed an unfixable dint in the history of Asylum Seekers in Britain. Now the general public view asylum seekers in a stereotypical way.
The bottom line is, Asylum Seekers are not treated fairly in the news, and instead, they are criticized and discriminated when we really can’t judge all asylum seekers on the behaviour and situation of a select few. For some, the newspapers criticism could be well placed, but for others, it is well wide of the mark. |
