| A
sound wave is a longitudinal wave in an elastic medium; a wave
producing
an audible sensation. A sound
wave is a form that travels through matter or air. Sound
waves have three different kinds of characteristics:
wavelength,
frequency,
and amplitude. A sound wave is formed by the back-and-forth
vibration of an object displacing the nearby air particles
and setting into motion a longitudinal wave through simple harmonic
motion. A good example of vibration is a guitar string when it
is plucked. If you were to tighten,
loosen,
lengthen,
and shorten a string of the guitar it would make a different
sound every time. When hearing a sound many people and animals use their ears to hear sound, or also if a loud sound is made they can perceive it through the sense of touch. Sound waves that are has a long wavelength is known as a low pitch. A sound wave with a short wavelength has a high pitch. | ||
"Music is the
one incorporeal entrance into the higher world of knowledge which
comprehends mankind but which mankind cannot comprehend."
-- Ludwig van Beethoven, quoted by Bettina von Arnin, letter to Goethe, 1810 |
