Increasing computer speed.

People commonly ask how they can increase their computer's speed. Some of the main reasons a computer may run slow are that you are trying to use too much of your RAM, or your hard drive is cluttered with unnecessary and/or unused files. Following these steps will you keep your computer running smoothly. There are three basic ways to do this:

Disk Cleanup.

  • Open the start menu.

  • Once the start menu is open click on "Run" and type "cleanmgr." This stands for Cleanup Manager, as seen in the image below.

  • Press "OK" and the Disk Cleanup utility should open in a window similar to the one below.

  • Let the Disk Cleanup load and you should get a new dialog box that asks you to choose what to delete.

    • Delete Selection
  • Click in the small boxes to put a check on the items you would like to delete, and then press "OK". We recommend that you delete any files that take up any large amount of space.
  • Finally, the cleanup will begin and may take anywhere from 5 minutes on up depending on how many items are on your hard drive.
