Did you know that before the Rosetta Stone's discovery, no one knew how to read ancient Egyptian heiroglphics?
On this page you will learn about the Rosetta Stone. You will also learn what is on it, where it's been, who deciphered it and about ancient hieroglyphics. There are many things to learn about the Rosetta Stone.
The Rosetta Stone has three languages on it. According to the website article The Rosetta Stone the three languages on the stone are hieroglyphics, Greek, and demotic. The article stated hieroglyphics are ancient writings from ancient Egypt. The article also stated demotic is everyday writing from ancient Egypt (2). The writing on the Rosetta Stone, according to the article, is a decree written three times, stating the first anniversary of 13 year-old Ptolemy V's coronation (1). There are many writings on the Rosetta Stone.

According to the book The Riddle of the Rosetta Stone: Key to Ancient Egypt, by James Cross Giblin, a French scholar, by the name of Jean-Francois Champillion was the first man to realize that hieroglyphics stand for sounds, not letters (34-35 Giblin). The author stated, right after Champillion discovered this, he ran downstairs, told his brother, than promptly fainted (Giblin 33). According to the book The Mystery of the Rosetta Stone: The Story of the Rosetta Stone and the Race to Decipher  Egyptian Hieroglyphs, by Carol Donoughue, another man, a scientist named Thomas Young had discovered how to read the demotic writing, but not the hieroglyphics (34-35 Donoughue). Without Jean or Thomas, the language and culture of ancient Egypt would be lost.
According to the book, The Mystery of the Rosetta Stone: The Story of the Rosetta Stone and the Race to Decipher  Egyptian Hieroglyphs Napoleon Bonaparte found the Rosetta Stone in 1799, at Rashid or Rosetta, Egypt, which is located near the Nile river(20). The book also stated, there are two stories as to how it was found. One story says that it was found in a wall, the other says it was just found on the gound. The website article, titled The Rosetta Stone, says after Napoleon's defeat, the Rosetta Stone became English property(2). Today it is exhibited in the British museum; it's been there since 1802(2). Overall the Rosetta Stone has changed hands many times.
The Rosetta Stone has helped us progress in the learnings and teachings of ancient Egyptian culture and hieroglyphics. There are many things on the Rosetta Stone, and thanks to Champillion and Young we found out what those things mean. It has also traveled many places, has changed hands and now is in England. Without the Rosetta stone we would know little about Egyptian hieroglyphics.
