There are different dangers in Italy but this one caught my eye. The hitmen (a gang) caught Giuseppe Arredia, 17, was killed plus two others (the hitmen killed them) (Hinckle 40). Also six were wounded (Hinckle 40). The town of Gela has 36,000 homes without water, sewer, or paved streets (Hinckle 40). Ninety thousand are under the age of eighteen (Hinckle 40). In 1989 a code passed saying no jail time for miner committing a crime with a 12-year sentence (Hinckle 40). The unemployment is 15% (Hinckle 40). Many move north or commit to crime, some kids run errands for 500 dollars such as planting bombs, starting fires, or dealing drugs (Hinckle 40). In Gela streets empty at 8:00 because of fear (Hinckle 40). Also police in Gela rountinely search cars ( Hinckle 40) . 30,000 people shut down Gela with a genral strike ( Hinckle 40). When the hit men killed all those people it sent a killing message to the commuity ( Hinckle 40).
Religion plays a very important role in Italy's everyday life ( Hausam 26). 95% of Italy's people are Roman Catholics (Hausam 26). If you are a Roman Catholic you make your First Communion (Hausam 26). The girls wear white dreses and the boys wear blue suits (Hausam 26). Even though 95% of Italy's people are Roman Catholics Muslims are growing because of the immagration from North Africa (Hausam 26). There are also small groups like Jewish and Postestants (Hausam 26). In southern Italy some belive in folk tales (Hausam 26). Like women are said to have magic powers (Hausam 26). Some hospitals, schools, and even charities are run by the church (Hausam 26). Religion plays an important role in Italy's everyday life (Hausam 26). Plus most Catholics are named by saints (Hausam 26). So, they have name days to celebrate their saint (Hausam 26).                                                  Permission granted by AP Archives according to licensure agreement with Hudson Middle School.
