As seen from the table above, we organize our
work done according to each person's different
strengths. We have a good balance of talents -
Some are good in languages, some in content and
some in IT…etc.
Our group leader assigned us tasks according to
our strengths, where we complement each other's
weaknesses with each other's strengths. For
example, those who are not good in web designing
work more with the content of the website,
preparing the interview and survey questions.
This does not mean we could not help – we helped
what we could, for we were a team and not
individuals. For instance, we helped the leader
in the codes after we were told what to do, we
gave our comments on the website, whether it was
good or bad...etc.
As you can see from the table, we have a diverse
background of nationalities. Our diverse
background does not limit to only nationalities,
we came from different social backgrounds.
Joseph came from a scientifically inclined
background where science is focused, Kai Jun and
Kelson come from a background where they believe
in brute force, while TangSheng while growing up
believed in a mixture of hardwork and
creativity, learning from great Chinese people
such as Yang Chen Ning. These different points
of views are a result of our different
nationalities and backgrounds.
However, what's the use of diversity if it does
not aid in our project? In fact, our diversity
plays a very important role in the whole
development of our website. During group
meetings, we would share our thoughts,
influenced from our background, and we consider
all points of views. This resulted in a
different approach, instead of being one-sided,
we strove to use all the different points of
views!
For instance, Joseph who came from a background
where science is heavily emphasized suggested
interviewing top scientists who are experts in
the brain. We used that diversity for us and we
had an interview with an expert on the brain,
making a more all-rounded content. And this was
where we worked towards to as well, striving to
see things from each of our points of view.
Our diversity in backgrounds helped us to have a
more all-rounded content for our website and the
diversity in our skills allowed effectiveness
for the development of the website. We are proud
to say that we would not have been able to
develop our website to such extent of success
without the diversity of our group members in
social backgrounds and skills.
Also, we were lucky that this was a group
project. Each of us were strong in one area or
another and this helped us to, as a team, be
strong together in all areas. An example would
be conducting the survey. None of us, except Kai
Jun, had a really wide circle of influence, and
were very charismatic. If the rest of us were to
conduct the survey, we would have not reached
our target of 100 surveys.
Each of our team members was very important and
crucial to the success of this project. In the
interview, we shared responsibilities, as can be
seen through the assigning of our tasks. One of
us asked the questions, another was the scribe;
another was the video recorder, while the last
person was the audio recorder. With this plan,
we managed to get the most out of the interview,
which proved to be very useful. We completed the
hurdles as a group, bonded together and not as
individuals.
Besides each of our individual strengths
supporting as pillars to the success of our
project, we also worked hard together as a group
for this project. There is a Chinese saying that
goes "Three fools is victorious over a really
smart person". This means that even if three
people work together, we can still be very
victorious. This was how important teamwork was
to us and it was a constant reminder throughout
the project on the importance of teamwork.
Our journey was not a bed of roses but our
teamwork pulled us through. We encountered
difficulties and we were inexperienced in web
design. This is our first year doing ThinkQuest
but instead of complaining - We held many group
discussions to solve problems together. We came
to a solution that despite this difficulty, we
will support each other by sharing
responsibilities to the best of our abilities.
It is with every member's effort that we managed
to overcome the challenges.
Our teamwork saw us through this project and
without this strong teamwork, we'd not have
jumped over this hurdle that blocks us from a
successful completion of the project. Our
efforts paid off and we are proud to say that
this project could not have been done with one
member less. Truly, we jumped through the
hurdles together that we did it!
