There are several types of radioactive decay. These types are Alpha (α), Beta (β), and Gamma (γ). In this picture it shows the strengths. The weakest is alpha which can be stopped by regular paper. Beta which can be stopped with thin metal such as aluminum foil, and gamma that is the strongest and required thick metal or lead to block.
