About Colchester Royal Grammar School

Records have been found mentioning a "town school" or "great school" in Colchester as far back as the start of the 13th century. Colchester Royal Grammar School (CRGS) is a direct descendant of this and was granted two Royal Charters, the first in 1539 by Henry VIII and the second by Elizabeth I in 1584.

CRGS is continually and consistently ranked as one of the country's most respected schools and as one of the best academic institutions at all levels. The school has boys aged 11 to 18 and also admits girls in the sixth form, forming a total student population of just over 700 pupils.

The school's buildings are a blend of old and new, ranging from a grand hall and library to recently constructed chemistry laboratories, built when the school achieved specialist science status. The site also includes mature gardens, accessible for students to use, a heated outdoor swimming pool and extensive playing fields off site.

As much as the school looks forward to the future, and the challenges this presents, it remains true to its traditional values. The school not only aims to educate academically, but also tries to shape well rounded individuals. The pleasant atmosphere of the school is based on manners and consideration for others, be they pupils or members of staff.
Ofsted inspectors recognised that "pupils and staff work very well together in an extremely happy and orderly community; there are consistently excellent relationships and mutual respect" and concluded that "There is a very positive ethos of high achievement and care for the individual throughout the school".

It is this blend of academia and personal development that makes CRGS a great school for all who are involved in it.

This, the school for the English members of the EcoLearning team, is the school we intend to make more eco-friendly.
