What We Did: Projectors

« Back to What We Did

At CRGS there is a projector in nearly every room, each a high power consumer. We decided to monitor the ICT, Modern Languages, Maths and Science departments for one week, and to count how many projectors were left on at the end lessons at three different times during the day; the beginning of breaktime, the beginning of lunchtime and the end of the school day.

Having monitored them for the week a notice was designed that would be put onto the projectors which would appear when there is no input of signal (i.e. when the computer is on standby or nothing is plugged into the projector but the projector is still on).

We then monitored the same projectors for a week after the change had been implemented and found that it had had little effect on those particular departments. However once the change had been implemented on projectors around the whole school it was noticeable that teachers paid attention to the notice and if the projector was not being used then they would shut it down.

The shutdown settings on the projectors were also changed so that if the picture had been hidden for 15 minutes then, as a power saving option, the projector would shut down whereas before the projector would stay on, consequently wasting power. This change has caused some confusion as school, as some teachers had forgotten that the change had been made and finding that the projector had shut down was occasionally inconvenient.
