Mitochondrial DNA
An Informational Guide on the Origin of Human Evolution

How Does Everything Fit?

Since mtDNA and Y-chromosomes have a slow rate of genetic mutation, we can use them as a genetic clock to turn back to a time before any mutations had developed.  We can then establish the rate of mutation and develop a time scale that can indicate a lot about the past.  Not only can we trace our ancestry through the direct maternal and paternal line, but we can also better understand human migration and our genealogical roots.
