Smoking Addiction: Treatment

NRT and Zyban are the only two medications effective in stopping the addiction to nicotine and smoking. NRT (nicotine replacement therapy) and Zyban patients are shown to have a greater chance of quitting than those trying through will power. Zyban is an anti-depressant drug that significantly decreases the withdrawal symptoms of smoking, therefore reducing the urges to continue to smoke.  NRT can include items such as nicotine patches.  This enables an individual to receive their dose of nicotine without having to smoke. The drugs operate by altering the amounts of neurotransmitters released in addiction and withdrawal.
