Alcohol Addiction: Treatment

Currently, there are three FDA approved medication for treatment of alcohol abuse.  These, however, are only prescribed for people who have stopped and are trying to maintain alcohol abstinence. 

• Antabuse- works by causing a severe reaction when alcohol is consumed while the user is under the effects of this drug.
• Naltrexone- it blocks serotonin receptors in the brain, thus preventing the high people get when taking alcohol
• Acamprosate- reduces the withdrawal symptoms of alcohol
