Inspector Brown was in his office reading a newspaper when the telephone rang. “Can you come soon ! There has been a robbery in my house! My wife disappeared, too."
Said Robert Hughes, a 52-year-old manager.
“Can I have your address, please?", asked Inspector Brown.
“32, Croosberry Street, Leyland”, answered Robert.
"I'll be there in half an hour, just be patient.”, said the Inspector.
Inspector Brown got into his car and switched on the radio, the speaker announced a heavy storm to sweep the eastern coast and the north. Inspector Brown picked up speed but was stranded as the traffic was heavy.
When he arrived he pulled up his car near a shutdown newsstand and walked straight away until he caught sight of the number of the house. He rang the door bell.
“Are you Mr Robert Adams?", asked The Inspector.
"Yes, come in, please.”, asked Mr Robert Adams.
"How did the burglary happen?", inquired the Inspector.
“I was on a trip to Paris, when I came back today I found the rear window smashed and the whole alarm system disabled. Just around 1:00 am this morning I spoke with my wife on the phone.”, he said
“All my private documents, my wife's jewellery and thousand of dollars were stolen.”, he continued in a shocking manner.
“Did you suspect your wife Mr Robert Adams?", asked the Inspector.
“Quite interesting ! Look there is a smashed clock on the floor.”, pointed the Inspector.
He picked it up with a tissue and glanced at the time. “It's strange ! the clock stopped at 22:23 pm and you said you called your wife around 1:00 am this morning. We certainly need a bit of mathematics to solve this enigma.", said the Inspector with a broad smile on his face. |
