Casetă text: TRADITIONAL COSTUMES
IN
ROMANIA

Through out history, the structure of the Romanian traditional clothing hasn’t changed. The costume for both men and women is usually consist of a white shirt, tied around by a leather belt. In the past the length of the shirt was different: for women it reached to the ankles while men wore it quite short, over the trousers.
Other parts of a man’s costume are the so called “cioareci” which are tight white trousers made of rough wool, a waistcoat and an overcoat. They also wear different sorts of hats: in summer time straw hats, and fur hats in winter.
The most common women costume has two rectangular straight aprons, maid of wool, which are worn at the back and front with the white underskirt showing at the sides. Headwear is a very important part of a woman’s traditional costume. Young ladies used to undercover their heads.
The types of head covering worn by women were a cotton scarf, a bonnet or a straw hat.
The most common and the oldest type of footwear was the leather sandals called opinci worn with woolen socks. Boots were first introduced in the 19th century. They are made of leather and were first introduced in Romania by the Hungarians living in Transylvania.
Nowadays the traditional Romanian costumes are only worn at festivals and in very few regions of the country.
