Maryam Henein (currently creating a CCD documentary) wrote in The Daily Green blog that the largest beekeeper in the US has been stricken by CCD. Nearly 40,000 hives, moved to holding yards in California for almond pollination, are now empty.

Colony Collapse Disorder is detrimental to flower and crop growth, honey production, and the livelihood of beekeepers. In fact, honeybees offer so many different gifts, there are a number of important things at stake. From pollination to products from the honeybee hive, bees are some of our Earth's greatest providers.

In New Hampshire, honeybees are responsible for pollinating apple crops. The United States is the second highest producer of apples in the world.

Honeybees are vital pollinators in agricultural, urban, and natural landscapes. Honeybees pollinate about 130 fruit, vegetable, nut, ornamental, and fiber crops in the United States. This yields about $15 billion annually through improved crop yield and product quality.

In Africa, honey has been used to heal wounds. It has also been used to treat
burns and ulcers on the skin, because of its ability to take water away from the
site of injury, allowing the skin to re-graft.

Hundreds of millions of dollars are additionally generated through the sale of hive products such as honey, wax, pollen propolis, royal jelly, and venom. Many of these products are not only food sources, but used medicinally as well. Read on to see the medicinal uses of products from honeybees.

Many beekeepers move their hives in order to pollinate local crops. Moving hives can be a stressor domesticated honeybees face, thus weakening their immune systems.

Beekeepers can keep bees for profit. Apiaries can be large-scale businesses, to get high yields of honey for business. Beekeeping can also be done on a small scale, for the pure enjoyment of the hobby.
Beekeepers can strategically place colonies to pollinate crops in the area for which farmers pay a fee.
