Short run health impacts of an oil spill include illnesses caused by toxic fumes or by the consumption of organic organisms. Other impacts on the environment include the losses and destructions of fisheries, boating and other uses of the affected water. Moreover, oil spills take a long period of time to clean up and the constant exposure of such an environment poses a health threat to workers cleaning up the oil spill.
