Transcript: Interview with a College Student
What do you the Internet for at home?
I use it for homework and “stuff”. To find out answers to questions that maybe I don’t know. I use it for my space and face book. Looking out for my friends, planning stuff to do at the weekend. Everything, really.
How much time do you spend on the internet a week?
I’m don’t know. At least 3 hours on it a night. So 3x 7. 21 hours.
How does the internet help you with your schoolwork?
Well if I’m ever stuck with a question, I can just type it in to Google, and the answer will come up for me. Ye, it helps me in any way I need it.
How would you describe the internet in three words?
A grand thing!
What do you think the future of the internet will be?
I think it will be big computers, all touch screen. Everything you need at your finger tips. It will be super fast, everything will come within a second. Maybe even later on in the future all you have to do is think what you want, and will come up on screen.
Can you remember the first ever time you went on the internet, and what age was you?
Oh, I don’t know how old I was. Erm, really low down in high school. It was really really really slow. We had to load a webpage and it would take 10 minutes. You would be like yes, come on. It’s working. Then there was the introduction of msn, and everyone thought it was amazing.
What dangers do you think you can have on the internet?
Well, you no there’s the obvious. Sort of the bad people, taking advantage of people over the internet. I remember a couple of years ago when I first got msn, I had a friend who’s name I won’t mention, got added on msn by a guy from Australia , and she asked him to add him myself. He seemed like a really nice guy, but I knew something was odd about him to begin with so I blocked him and never spoke to him again. This was definitely the right thing to do, because my friend had quite an odd experience, were he turned the web cam on, and I don’t want to go into explicit detail what he did. But what she saw wasn’t very nice.
Does that mean your always careful now?
Definitely, I won’t add anyone I don’t know. Unless they are friend of a cousin or something. I don’t really mind, that sort of thing. I’m not extremely careful, but strangers are never a good idea.
Do you use the vpn at home?
Yes. I use the vpn all the time, because I do ICT as a subject it’s really helpful. That means I don’t have to transfer all my work home, it’s just there at a touch of a button. It might be a bit slow, and sometimes it doesn’t always work, but I don’t know what I’d do without it. I’d be a lot behind on all my work, if isn’t wasn’t in place.
