Conservation

What is Conservation?
Conservation is about protecting and managing our natural resources environment.

Conservationist

is someone who works to save things in nature. For example, some conservationists work to protect wild animals or plants. Others care about wild places, such as deserts or wetlands. Anyone can be a conservationist, even a person with no experience whatsoever! For example, if you recycle soda bottles and cans, throw your empty restaurant take-away bags in the dustbin instead of on the ground, or turn lights and appliances off when you are not there, you are already conserving! In South Africa for example everyone is being urged to conserve Electrical Energy as there is a serious shortage of power that even results in load-shedding or electricity rationing.

Why do plants grow so well in the soil?

The  soil has a lot of the things in it that plants like to munch. They also use their roots to drain water from the soil for a nice, refreshing drink. This also keeps the soil from staying too wet. Roots help make soil, too. They split rocks into pieces that later become soil.

Can we lose soil?

Yes. Soil “erodes” when there is nothing to help it stay in place.

How can we keep our soil in place?

Plant some grass, trees or other plants in areas where the soil is eroding. They help keep soil from moving around. Conservation is the best way to ensure that we have land to live on now and in the future.

What about books?

Many trees are harmed in the production of books as paper is made from books. So try to sell your old books and plant trees, and buy used books and save trees! Also on Amazon you can buy the Kindel which is an “electronic book reader” its like the ipod of the book world and you can actually download tens of thousands of books (it can store 200 books and you can expand the memory) with the free of charge wireless internet.

You can also try swapping. Swapping is a simple procedure. You should try and swap books that ypou don't want for ones that you want from others who may also be interested in your ones.

What else can you do?

Plant suitable, local indigenous trees in your school grounds, public parks and unused municipal landMake a map of all the trees in your area. Include individual trees which deserve conservation because of their size or other special value. Prepare a report stating why the trees are important, and present it to your school and town authorities.

Some Ideas for Business

  • Start a plant a tree project for every product sold
  • Plant a tree for a every new client you get.
  • Use Re-newable resources as raw materials.
  • Donate some of your profits to a tree caring organisation.

GREEN HOUSE GASSES REDUCTION TIPS

Share

If you only use your tent, ladder, or video player once in a while, consider lending it to others. Sharing decreases the energy and pollution from mining, manufacturing, packaging, and transporting new goods.

Get a new A/C filter.
Cleaning or replacing your air conditioner filters increases efficiency and makes it run in peak condition.

Go on a tree spree.
Planting trees removes carbon from the atmosphere, filters air, and prevents soil erosion. It’s best to plant trees native to your area that don’t require heavy irrigation.

Lose the heavy stuff.
Each 100 lbs. in your car increases gas consumption by 1-2%

Ask the fuel attendant to practice gas station etiquette.
Handle the pump with care and avoid topping off. Spilled fuel evaporates and causes air pollution. Also, try to buy gas during cooler times in the day or during evening hours when there is less evaporation.
