What is Global Warming?
Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-twentieth century and its projected continuation. (www.wikipedia.com)
It is caused by green house gasses, which trap in the sun's infra-red rays in the earth's atmosphere. These then heat up teh earth's surface.
Causes
Global warming is caused by many things. They include driving, smoke made by factories and even FARTING. It is important say though that the MAIN cause of global warming is due to the to release of these green house gases by human activities. The largest producers of these gases are the thermal power plants, which burn the fossil fuels and produce these gases in large quantities. In South Africa, The MAJUBA COAL PLANT is the largest producer of coal-fired electricity in the world.
Some of these greenhouse gasses released by human activities include:
- Carbon dioxide from cars and Airplanes
- Methane (Second most important)
- Nitrous Oxide (sometimes used as anesthetic)
Deforestation
After carbon emissions caused by people, deforestation is the second main cause of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
The destroying of tropical forests and trees alone is throwing hundreds of millions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year. This has numerous effects.
