Role of Government Bodies

In the crusade against dengue, the government plays a vital role in controlling the disease from spreading. In Malaysia, the Ministry of Health and local authorities such as City or Town Councils have jointly taken implemented many strategies. Among them:

1. Government Act

“Government Act A 1086. Destruction of disease-bearing insects act (Amendment act 2000)” is gazetted. A person found to disobey this act may be fined or charged(1).

2. Surveillance

Receive notices on dengue cases from hospitals, clinics, schools and village heads. These provide indicators for further action. Fogging would be carried out by local authorities in housing area where 2 or more cases of dengue fever are reported within one week.

3. Enforcement

Joint team of officers from Ministry of Health and local authorities conduct on-site check and destroy larvae at residential premises and construction sites. Fines may be imposed on the owner of properties.

4. Information

  • The public are recommended to add Abate® into water storing items to kill mosquito larvae. In November 2007, the Ministry of Health carried out a major campaign against aedes mosquitoes. During the campaign free packages of Abate® were distributed.
  • Leaflets and brochures to inform the public on ways to prevent and curb Aedes mosquito breeding are distributed.

5. Awareness Campaign

  • Heads of schools are encouraged to remind students to survey their backyards and destroy any possible mosquito breeding ground as precautionary steps.
  • Schools and local communities are encouraged to carry out communal cleaning activities.
  • Reminders on the danger of aedes mosquitoes are printed on bookmarks and distributed to school children.

  • Public awareness campaigns through strategically placed posters and television advertisements.
