The Scream by Edvard Munch
Edvard Munch painted four versions of The Scream. The first was taken from the National Gallery in Oslo, Norway in 1994 and held for ransom. It turns out that the guard on duty ignored the alarm going off and the thieves left a note thanking the museum for the poor security. Later that year, it was offered back to the Norwegian government for one million dollars. The government didn't take the deal and the police ended up finding parts of the frame leading them to arrest three Norwegians who had the painting. In August of 2004, the second version of The Scream was stolen from the Munch Museum along with another one of his originals, Madonna. These two, however, were taken at gunpoint during museum hours. The paintings were discovered on August 31, 2006. Three men were convicted and sentenced with jail time between four and eight years each. The painting was recovered with small cuts and holes and the events surrounding the recovery remain unreleased.
