The Duchess of Devonshire by Thomas Gainsborough
This work was stolen in 1878 by Adam Worth. He stole it from London art dealers Agnew & Agnew. He tried to use these dealers to negotiate the release of one of his accomplices from prison. This accomplice, however, had already been pardoned, so Worth decided to demand a ransom instead. The ransom was agreed upon in 1901 for an undisclosed amount.
