Art theft is an increasing problem across the whole world. Simply speaking, art theft is the stealing or unlawful taking of paintings, sculptures, cultural memorabilia, etc. The common reason that people are stealing art is for resale, ransom, and greed. Occasionally the person who steals the object has been hired by private collectors or people from the underground market. Often, thieves take their stolen goods to the black market where they sell or trade these valuables for other illegal goods, such as drugs and weapons. Unfortunately for thieves, after most art is stolen, there usually isn’t a big market that wants to buy a highly priced piece of stolen property.

Factors contibuting to the increasing frequency of this crime are the ill-equipped security measures at museums and galleries, constant political chaos around the world, and and the overall lack of awareness to the growing problem. Many ancestral and historical artifacts have been looted due to ethnic turmoil and wars. What the perpatrators of these heinous crimes fail to understand is that they are not only taking from one individual or one ethnic group, they are stealing from all of mankind. Art is a gift from our past that can teach present and future generations about their common heritage and culture. We must first preserve our past save our future.
