Psychology

What should be established is that the human mind is a system. A system whose complex matrix forms the reality that we experience and interprets stimuli to give us a picture of the world. However, like all systems the brain is divided up into discreet parts, each which can be seen to contributing to the whole so that the brain is able to function correctly. For example, the lobes of the cerebrum which makes up most of the brain mass. These lobes have many functions, many of which are associated with the brains processing of our reality by the information which it gains through its senses. Also consider the brain stem, which is important for the basic yet vital functions of the body such as breathing and regulating one’s heartbeat (Brain Structures and Their Functions). As Loretta Peters-Martin suggests, the subconscious part of our brain is actually only the conscious part which grew up until we were 10 years old and then ceased to grow. The remaining brain growth was then for our conscious brain (Peters-Martin, Loretta). This also explains why experiences in one’s childhood lead to sustainable psychological damage of this person later in their life? Peters-Martin says that one women whom always had problem with relationships with men showed under hypnosis that as a child her mother had told her that “Don't ever trust men - they're not worth the trouble”(Peters-Martin, Loretta).

Psychologists also use the subconscious mind in examining the personality of their subject, for example in sessions where they use Rorschach inkblot test. This test involves showing the subject ten different inkblots. The purpose of this is first to analyze the subjects’ spontaneous reaction towards the inkblot and then later for further analysis of the subject whilst he/she analyzes the inkblot (The Rorschach Test). The inkblots themselves do not actually illustrate anything, however the subject draws a spontaneous conclusion of what the illustration depicts. The subject must be allowed to develop their own image of what the illustration shows. It is from this that it can be deduced that the mind also uses its subconscious part of the mind to decide the illustration. This reveals to psychologists the “real” emotions of the subject and how they view the world (Rorschach Inkblot Test).
