The internet, a modern tool of obtaining knowledge, a sophisticated tool of communications, but have you ever asked yourself what can it do? The internet is a powerful medium that consists of millions of web pages like a library of untold amounts of information, some of those web pages provide reliable and credible information which proves useful; some only breeds contempt and mischief. This portal of learning is one of the ways racism breeds and spreads with speeds akin to animals on a rampage. With millions if not billions of people having access to this information, racist remarks could have easily been spread to thousands of eyes as you read these lines.
Currently known as Cyber-Racism, Racists around the world spread racist ideas and propaganda by establishing racist websites filled with racially discriminative and degrading information or remarks. The numbers of these websites are ever increasing as they appear one by one all around the world. The spread of information all these ideas and information invokes racist thoughts in the minds of the readers and may cause racial disharmony not just in a region, but around the world. This may indirectly influence the formation of further social barriers of distrust between races and in worst case scenarios, may even lead up to events such as racial riots. Racist blogging is another way of racism on the World Wide Web. By criticizing other races, racist criticism in the form of blogging may even include inflammable insults and insulting remarks. This is like a time bomb just waiting to explode. Racist blogging may too spark racial riots, racial discrimination and more social problems. No one wishes for such things to happen, but they do, all around the world, the presence of extremists are inevitable. They make trouble into to fragment society, and we as the users of the internet cannot be easily swayed by the judgments of these people.

On the internet, apart from racist bloggers and websites, racism also has a relatively new disguise. Racism may spread through racist songs mostly targeted at teens. Exposure to these sort of things over the internet will eventually have an effect, as the message gets driven into your brains. This causes unknowing teens to fall straight into the clutches of racism, and commit racist acts without thought or question. Racist games too still exist on the internet, such as Grand Theft Auto. These target an even younger audience. Games like these strongly influence young innocent minds of children, whose points of views are easily swayed. As the saying goes, habits are cultivated from young. If a young boy child begins to be influenced by such things, racism would be a part of him by the time he reaches his teens. As quoted from Hillary Clinton: Teaches kids its OK to diss people because theyre a different color, or they’re from a different place..That is not all, these habits would eventually be carried with him through adulthood, by which time it would be hard for him to correct these mistakes. Being racist can be compared with taking drugs, once you are taken over by it, it is really very hard to stop and change. By targeting the young, these extremists try to penetrate a weak spot in our society.
The World Wide Web is a place of learning, one can learn good things, and one can in turn learn bad things. More and more people are now starting up anti racist websites. This is to curb and stop racism on the internet and attempt to maintain peace and stability within our societies. As fast as racism may spread on the internet, anti racist ideas also are spreading to help curb racism. Government powers are also stepping in to get rid of this social menace. Laws are set up to eliminate racist blogging in various countries. Government aided websites are set up to help halt racism at a faster pace. Educational web pages are being set up to help the young, guiding them to the right path of anti racism. Anti racist songs are being composed to help drive in the message of equality among races. For example Michael Jacksons Black or white was a hit in the 90s or even today and it help spread the message of being equal to all races.
The internet a portal of knowledge, a system of communication, a door to racial harmony. |
