DESCRIPTION
Avoidant personality disorder is a condition characterised by severe shyness, low self-esteem, high sensitivity to criticism and avoidance of social interaction.[1][4] A person with this disorder tends to feel socially incapable and avoids other people as much as they can.[4]
CAUSES
The cause is unknown, though as with other personality disorders negative childhood experiences can increase the chance of it occurring. It usually becomes obvious in childhood or adolescence.[2][3]Depression can lead to this disorder (see Symptoms). [2]
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms include worry about disapproval and criticism, having no close friendships, avoidance of social interactions, feelings of inferiority and inadequacy, feelings of social ineptness and reluctance to take part in social events. [2][3][4] This can affect the person's ability in the workplace so may damage their careers as well as their social life.[1] This disorder can be the cause or result of mood disorders, as depression can lead to withdrawal from social situations. [2]
PREVALENCE AND SUSCEPTIBILITY
In North America, between 0.5% and 1% of adults are diagnosed with this disorder. [2]
TREATMENT
Antidepressants may be prescribed as they can lessen the impact of rejection for patients.Psychotherapy is often involved as well. Left untreated this disorder can lead to social isolation and the development of other personality or mood disorders.[1]
