What are personality disorders?
Personality disorders, also known as 'character disorders', are where parts of a persons personality significantly deviate from what is considered normal, to the point that they have a serious negative impact on someone's life. Most people tend to have differing personality traits and these can become exaggerated in extreme in stressful situations, but when a trait starts affecting someone's everyday life then it can be considered a 'disorder'.
The specific cause of personality disorders has not yet been proven, but it is believed that negative childhood experiences, such as sexual or physical abuse and negligence from parents or carers can contribute to their development. Most personality disorders are treated with psychotherapy (talking therapy) and/or self help groups.
