A GUIDE TO MENTAL ILLNESS

Hello, welcome to our website, designed to inform you of the effects of a variety of common mental disorders and to help you find support for yourself or someone close to you who may suffer from such illnesses.

This knowledge should provide you with a greater understanding of these disorders and the stigma often associated them. This website is not designed for self-diagnosis and should you have any concerns you should contact a qualified General Practitioner for more information.

Mental illnesses can be traced historically, but have never been fully understood. Many people, in their confusion about mental illness, may stereotype people who suffer from them as psychotic, aggressive figures. However, the World Health Organization has calculated that 1 in 4 people suffer from a mental illness at some point in their lives. The Lancet reported that 14% of global disease burden is due to mental disorders. Many of these disorders can be temporary, curable or manageable through medication and may not be associated with agression. Also, many mental illnesses are not obvious - eating and mood disorders for example.

This website covers many disorders but some are general descriptions, for more detailed information about other less common illnesses, please see the recommended links page on the left.
