People who pay social security in Spain are given healthcare for free or at a lowered cost. Families and retirees are included. To get a social security number you would generally have to work for a company or become self employed. In 1991 there were estimated to be 354 public hospitals, 149 private hospitals and around 312 private business hospitals.
