Mythical Birds
There are many different kinds of mythical birds that are told stories of all over the world. Some kinds are the Thunderbird and the Hippogriff. The two important mythical birds that are on this website are the Phoenix and Griffin.
Griffin
The Griffin is a very majestic creature in the mythical world. It has the body and hind legs of a lion. It also has the wings, and head of an eagle. The fore feet are constructed like the talons of an eagle, but they have the strength of a lion's paw. It is known to be the king of beasts. Their talons are as large as the horns of an ox. Its mortal enemy is the horse, which it is able too carry. They build their nests in the Hyperborean Mountains where they dig up gold and emeralds. The Griffins first appeared in Mesopotamia and Egypt. They were a long line of guardians and protectors for the Mesopotamians and the Egyptians. They carried the Head of the Sacred Hawk so they could defeat the enemies of the pharaohs. The Griffins closets relative is the Hippogriff. It also is in the family tree with the Roc, a mythical bird with enormous wings, and the Simurgh, a mythical bird very similar to the Phoenix.
Phoenix
Phoenixes are some of the most majestic birds in the mythical world. They symbolize the meaning of life, death, and resurrection. It has wonderful tints and shades of warm colors all around its body. Its feathers are golden around its neck. Also, its wing and tail are an amazing display of red and gold feathers. In Greek and Egyptian mythology the Phoenix is associated with the sun god. It has been known to live in the Land of Dawn. They are said to live at least 540 years and are said to be able to live over 1400 years! The thing they are most famous for is how they die and get reborn. What Phoenixes do is they gather a special type of spice when they know when they are going to die. When the time comes they bring the spice into the Land of Dawn's desert and wait. Then they burn up from the sun and all that's left is ash. After 3 days a reborn Phoenix emerges from the ashes of the dead Phoenix.
