The Magic Latern was basically an old form of a modern day projector. It consisted of an oil painting and a lamp that was placed in a dark room, it then would appear bigger against another flat surface.
The Thaumatrope, an 1824 toy, was circular with a painting on each side, it had two strings and when twirled around with those two strings the two paintings would appear as one.
The Zoetrope was a circle with two slits in it and paintings on the inside. The user would spin it and than look into it through the slits. It would appear as though the pictures were moving in full motion.
The Flip book was invented in 1868. When the user flipped through its pages quickly, it made it seem like the characters on the pages were moving, almost like a movie.
