Solutions - Activism
History has proven that we need the support of everybody, from the meanest peasant to the highest government official to end terrorism. Although no individual can directly affect its prevalence alone, certain people have made huge steps towards world peace through their political activism and effectiveness in peacefully unifying people, and whole nations, against violence and chaos.
Notable among these are India’s Mohandas Ghandi, South Africa’s Nelson Mandela, who was inspired by Ghandi, and the Buddhist Dalai Lama
Mohandas Ghandi
Gandhi during the occupation of the British in India maintained that “terrorism in the struggle for Indian independence was elitist” and “reliance on terrorism would mean that British rule would only be replaced by that of another small minority.” In a speech he made to an Indian Congress meeting, which was published in Young India, he rejected terrorism and denounced the terrorists as cowards. To Gandhi, “terrorism was less courageous than nonviolent resistance.” Gandhi during the occupation of the British in India maintained “terrorism in the struggle for Indian independence was elitist” and “reliance on terrorism would mean that British rule would only be replaced by that of another small minority.” In a speech he made to an Indian Congress meeting, which was published in Young India, he rejected terrorism and denounced the terrorists as cowards. Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was the creator of the Spear of the Nation, a military regiment of the African National Congress. It was considered to be a terrorist institution even though it was simply a revolutionary movement. After being jailed for 27 years, he became a man who helped transition South Africa’s government into a democratic one. His peace activism earned him the Noble Peace Prize. He used it as a tribute to all those people who toiled to maintain peace and end racism.

XIVth Dalai Lama
His holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is the spiritual head of the Tibetan people. The Dalai Lamas are reincarnations of the Bodhisattva of Compassion. He has been involved in much peace activity on behalf of the issues plaguing Tibetan people. He helped to draft a constitution for Tibet, thus ensuring a democratic government. His proposal of the Five-Point Peace Plan clearly reflects his desire to present new programs to resolve Tibetan issues. Gyatso is unique from his predecessors in that he maintains considerable connections with the west. In the past few years, he has been honored in recognition of his writings of peaceful Buddhist philosophy.
