Consequences - Society

When a terrorist incident strikes a nation, society temporarily devolves to a state of pandemonium. The government initially raises its security levels and, for a few days, the nation is ushered into a period of grieving. Then the government prepares for retaliation. It sends troops to foreign areas or sends diplomats to negotiate political and economic responses. In most cases, the nation goes back to using violence as their main tool to battle terrorism. They use their own brand of terrorism to fight terrorism, and thus ironically promote violence instead of putting an end to it. They legitimize their actions by claiming them to be just, but in essence they are telling the people of the world that it is ok to use violence in order to punish those who use violence. As John Mortimer said, “A ‘war against terrorism’ is an impracticable conception if it means fighting terrorism with terrorism.”
