Any terrorist incident has associated with it numerous casualties. Statistics show that bombings and facility attacks have the highest frequency of attacks ranging from 24,000 to 28,000 from 1970-1997. Assassinations are ranked second at 14,000 occurrences and then kidnapping at 4,000. Ironically, the acts that caused the most turmoil only occurred less than a 100 times, including hijacking.
During the course of our research, we discovered some astonishing evidence related to terrorist statistics. In the year 2005, the number of terrorist incidents peaked at 11,111 from only a mere 651 the year before. Accordingly, the number of fatalities and injuries were much higher. This shows that the number and intensity of terrorist acts are increasing every year.
The societies that are impacted by these events are affected not only economically, but also emotionally. A terrorist incident's consequences reach far beyond those directly affected, a ripple of fear and mistrust radiates out from the given event, leading to rash decisions and new unfounded prejudice. This in turn can lead to more antagonism, as the initial terrorist groups take the society's increased anti-terrorism policies as evidence to support their ideals.
