Alcoholism, a disease which devastates Romania?

Sociological studies realised after 1989 show that, among Europeans, Romanians are the first in alcohol consumption. Alcoholic addict live real dramas sometimes are unconscious, dramas who also affect people around them.

People have been always drinking alcohol. Probably he has discovered this liquid which helps him when is sad as soon as he opened his eyes. Alcohol is considered an aliment and is used like one. It is also a drug which creates dependence. Alcohol abuse, permanent or not, is a disease. The phenomenon has serious social implications.
Alcoholism is a contagious disease, but ends in loneliness. The alcohol addict cannot refuse this pleasure transformed into a systematic poisoning against all health problems (mental and physical), but also social problems. The consequences are, most of times, fatal. They are characterized through: loss of control on alcoholic drinks, concern for drugs and alcohol.

Initially, it was considered that alcoholism is a symptom of a psychic disorder. Nowadays it is thought that it is a disease which causes a lot of problems and can only be cured with efficient treatment. Untreated, alcoholism can aggravate, even from time to time periods of abstinence can occur.

Alcoholism cannot be cured. The alcoholic addict will never be able to return to that detaching against alcohol he had before, but can be treated. By stopping drinking alcohol, with medical help, its evolution can be stopped.

Myths about alcohol

Alcoholism is surrounded by a series of myths which make this habit to be inexactly known. The myths about alcohol make a phenomenon- ‘social denying’ of alcoholism, which means refusing reality. Although the disease of every 5 patients is generated by alcohol, statistics show that only few medical articles about alcoholism are published. This domain is either ignored, or avoided, against its big importance. The explanation is that a big part of the population is implicated, in one way or another, emotionally, with alcohol.
One of the myths says that alcoholism is genetic transmissible, from parents to child and so, alcoholic addict can become only those with antecedents in family. But against all scientific researches, the ‘alcoholic gene’ was not found. Alcoholism is due to alcohol consumption.

Another myth of alcohol says that there is a difference between the ‘usual’ drinker and the alcohol addict. The problem is that all alcohol addicts, with few exceptions, believe they are ‘normal’ drinkers. Actually, the beginner drinker and the alcohol addict, being nothing for the society, are about to have the same road, because there are no people who cannot become alcohol addicts, if they drink much enough, there are only people who have never drank alcohol. In the final stage of the disease, the control on the drank quantity is lost, and the first glass releases the unrestrained impulse to continue drinking until intoxication interferes. In that moment the stadium of ‘normal alcoholic’ is over fulfilled and is going to the next stadium, a person who, without family support, ends on the streets. From here, the only solution remained is total abstinence. The person will become an abstinent alcoholic, but not a cured one.

Other opinions about alcoholism

- It is said that people have troubles. Actually, in almost all the cases it is exactly inverse troubles appear because of alcohol.
- ‘When drunk, people show their real face’. Actually their real face is showed when they are not drunk.
- ‘If people drank limited quantities, they would not become alcoholic addicts.’ A lot of ‘responsible’ drinkers became alcoholic addicts because alcohol provokes dependence.
- ‘Natural drink are not injurious’. They lead to alcoholism anyway.
- ‘Beer is not detrimental’. Every drink affects (if it has alcohol).
- ‘Alcohol gives strengths’. The truth is that alcohol weakens the organism. For example, you cannot feel normally the need to breath. So, the brain and the heart are not sufficient oxygenated, which causes long term health problems.
- ‘Alcohol warms’. Actually alcohol weakens a part of the skin’s sensors, which makes you unaware about cold. This is the reason because many alcohol addicts sleep outside in winter, thinking it is hot, and until morning they die being frosted, or suffer serious chilblain.

ALCOHOL- FROM FUN TO PROBLEM

It is wonderful!

You have found, as a miracle, the man near whom you want to be for ever, and you have found him so quickly… He is cool, careful, loving and everything you want as a good fairy has read all your wishes in the stars and has put them into the person near you. Though, he has a little problem (and how much does this count when he has so many qualities?!), which you have noticed lately: he drinks too much…
Maybe at the beginning this did not bother you and you thought it is normal, that everybody does this or that it is cool to experiment at this age. Maybe you had the curiosity to try…

Does alcohol become our friend, becoming then an enemy?

Yes! Alcoholism, also known as ‘alcohol addict’, is a disease which consists into a strong desire to drink, and not stopping drinking alcohol in the moment when problems provoked by alcohol appear, as for example loosing your job or breaking the law and these consequences. Alcohol addict includes four symptoms:

- the permanent need to drink alcohol
- a loss of control- incapacity to drink only at special occasions
- psychic – symptoms provoked by alcohol restrict such as fainting, anxiety and sweat
- tolerance- the need to increase the alcohol quantity in order to feel the effects
