Real Estate

Hong Kong is considered to be a 'free economy' so anyone that actually has the money to do so can purchase real estate property. That may sound positive, but most people don't have enough money to buy real estate property because a large amount of the people in Hong Kong are poor. The poverty of Hong Kong limits the profit of receiving money from its real estate property. Because of that, it is fairly difficult to make a huge amount of money from selling real estate property.

Stock Exhanges and other Markets

A stock exchange is a system-based market for purchasing and selling financial products such as stocks, bonds, futures, options, and securities. The Association of Stockbrokers in Hong Kong formed the British colony's initial stock exchange in 1891 because they wanted to imitate the success of the Shanghai market which, at the time, was fairly influential. Twenty nine years later, the exchange's name changed to the "Hong Hong Stock Exchange". In 2006, Hong Kong received a large amount of initial public offerings, or stock, that had a value that was greater than everywhere else in the world but London. The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong ranges from the sixth to the ninth largest in the world. Its total market capitalization is worth approximately 2.18 trillion American dollars. In 2005, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange had a market turnover of about 582.2 trillion American dollars. That is approximately fourteen percent higher than the year before it. Hong Kong’s foreign exchange reserves accumulate to about 127.40 billion American dollars.

Relation to Poverty of Hong Kong

You may think that real estate and stock exchanges don't have much to do with the poverty in Hong Kong. However, there are many ways how they are related. Real estate, for example, relates to the poverty in Hong Kong because poor people can't buy real estate property. Stock exchanges also relate to the poverty in Hong Kong because poor people can't purchase stock. The reason why the real estate and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange are so successful is because there is luxury in Hong Kong as well. Like so many countries in the world, Hong Kong has a huge range between poor lives and rich lives. There are some rich people and there are many poor people. The reason why there are rich people in Hong Kong as well is because businesses, markets, corporations, and other companies have been rebuilt since the time that the British gave Hong Kong to China in 1997. When the British were controlling it, Hong Kong's poverty wasn't extreme. It actually had a fairly positive economy. However, when China had control, the government changed so owners of many companies ended their businesses because they did not want to be controlled by China. Therefore, business decreased, the economy decreased, and poverty increased. That is how they are related.
